FIELD / STATISTICS

Take my statistics class.

Statistics is the field where software produces a correct number and the student writes a wrong sentence about it. Running the test is the easy half. Saying what it means, and refusing to say what it does not, is where the marks are.

001The output is not the answer.

Most statistics assignments ask for two things and grade them separately: produce the analysis, then interpret it. The first is mechanical and increasingly automated. The second is where nearly all the marks are and where nearly all the losses happen, because a plausible English sentence about a statistical result can be flatly wrong in a way that reads perfectly well.

The classic example is worth stating precisely, since it appears in almost every course. A p-value below the threshold means the data would be unlikely under the null hypothesis. It does not mean the effect is large, that the hypothesis is proved, or that the finding matters in practice. A student who writes any of those three has produced a correct analysis and a wrong paper, and the grader marks the sentence.

So a specialist here reads output rather than recognizing it. That distinction, between someone who can identify which test was run and someone who can say what its result licenses you to claim, is the entire reason this desk is staffed with PhDs rather than general writers.

002What we cover.

Coursework across introductory sequences through graduate methods, in whichever tool your program mandates.

003Working shown, because that is what is marked.

In quantitative courses the majority of the rubric usually attaches to the process rather than the final figure. A correct answer with no working scores poorly; a wrong answer with sound working often scores most of the marks. Yet the instinct under time pressure is to submit the number.

Everything from this desk therefore comes back with the steps visible: which test, why that test rather than the obvious alternative, which assumptions were checked and what they showed, the output itself, and the interpretation stated in the units of the problem. That format serves the rubric and it also means you can follow the reasoning, which matters when the exam arrives and nobody can run the analysis for you.

004Exams, and statistics inside larger projects.

Statistics courses tend to close with a proctored examination, and that is the boundary. We do not sit them. What works instead is preparation built from the topics the exam actually weights, practised under a clock, with a statistician reviewing your wrong answers to separate a genuine gap from a repeated misreading of question types. That is exam prep, and in this subject it is unusually effective, because statistics errors tend to be systematic rather than random.

Where the analysis belongs to a thesis or capstone rather than to a course, it runs through the long-form desk, where the analysis and the language describing it are produced together so that a defense committee cannot find daylight between them.

STEP_01

Send the assignment

The brief, any data file you were given, and the tool your program mandates. That last detail changes what gets delivered.

STEP_02

Take the read

Within two hours: what the assignment is actually testing, whether the data supports it, and a price for the work.

STEP_03

Get working and meaning

Analysis with the steps visible, plus interpretation stated in the units of the problem rather than in abstract language.

Questions.

Is your work done in SPSS, R or Excel?

SPSS, R and Excel, matched to whatever your course mandates rather than to what we would prefer. Where syntax files or scripts must be submitted alongside results, those are produced too and written to be readable, since some rubrics award marks for the code itself and graders do read it.

Can you explain the analysis as well as run it?

Yes, and it is worth asking for explicitly. Everything comes back with the reasoning visible, and a statistician can walk you through it directly. This is the subject where explanation pays off most, because the concepts recur every week and a misunderstanding fixed in week three saves marks in every assignment after it.

The data is sitting there and I cannot pick a test. Now what?

That is the most useful question you can bring, and it is the one graduate rubrics reward. Test selection follows from your research question, your variable types and whether the assumptions hold. We work that out explicitly and write the justification, which is a rubric row in most graduate methods courses and the thing committees press on hardest.

Will you sit my statistics final?

No, and we decline these rather than negotiating. Preparation is what actually moves a statistics exam score, and it works better here than in most subjects because errors in this field are systematic: the same misread question type recurs. A statistician reviewing your practice answers can usually name the pattern in one session.

How is statistics work priced?

Per assignment or per term, quoted individually and free. An assignment requiring assumption checks, model building and written interpretation is a different job from a set of descriptive calculations. Send the brief and any dataset, and an itemized figure comes back within two hours with no obligation attached.
